The Finnish National Opera and Ballet and the digital culture festival Assembly are calling  teams to propose creative technological concepts that take live performance into new heights. This is an invitation to re-imagine  the experience of opera performance at the age of omnipresent digitality.

Open call

Can you envision how a live show can be augmented digitally?  How could you allow the audience members to be immersed into the story itself?

Your canvas is a performance that combines circus and opera into a spectacle never seen before. Paint over it with your digital brush and unleash your imagination. Make your magic come alive on stage at a performance that will take place in the FNOB year 2022.

The deadline for entries closed on July 31st, 2021.

Please note that the announcement of the finalist teams is delayed until August 31st, 2021.

Your task is to suggest a concept that augments the live performance in one way or another. For example, it can encourage interaction between the audience and the performances, or take the audience’s breath away by stunning visual or audio effects, like by surrounding the auditorium with a sound experience that will make elephants fly over each seat.

Teams can use XR, AI, mapping, game engines, code or whatever technological tools they wish. Teams are allowed to place new items among the seats or concentrate on the main stage. The only criteria is – the concept should enrich the spectacle in ways not experienced before.  Please note that concept ideas that can be realised within the auditorium space, as part of the live show.

Your proposed concept should embrace the spirit of performing arts, music, and most importantly opera and ballet. It can be a work in progress.

It is recommended to build a team to be able to fulfill the project.

The inspiration

The concept of CircOpera 2.0 is a performance mixing opera, circus and immersive technology. The stage performance, premiering in Autumn 2022, will include acts with acrobatics, jugglers, somersaults through the air and multiple opera arias, all coming together as CircOpera 2.0. The first CircOpera performance took place at the FNOB in 2016 and can be seen here.

The performance will be suitable for all ages and speakers of all languages.

The performance will take place on FNOB’s main stage in 2022.

The following video and music clips are provided  for inspiration for your concept.  You can use one or more elements as a starting point for your proposition, or wrap your concept around the CircOpera concept and the main stage more broadly.
