195 applications for “Memories of the Future” competition
The deadline to enter the Memories of the Future competition closed on the 23rd of April, and received almost 200 concept ideas for the Opera Beyond’s upcoming immersive art piece. Altogether there were almost 650 team members applying from 32 different countries.
Around five to ten of the teams will be invited to the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki for an intensive three-day event of idea conceptualisation and finalisation. Finalists are announced by 12.05.2019 on the Opera Beyond website. All the applicants will be informed of the results also by email, whether successful or not.
The shortlisted teams will get to develop their idea with a team of specialists, including names such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Paula Vesala, Callie Holderman (Magic Leap), Galit Ariel (WondARlands), Gabo Arora (LightShed) and Domhnaill Hernon (Nokia Bell Labs, Experiments in Arts and Technology). The pitching session will take place on May 31st, after which an international jury will choose the winning project.
The main prize of the competition is a 75.000€ production contract with The Finnish National Opera and Ballet to produce the chosen concept. Another 10.000€ of prize money will be allocated among teams that have made valuable contributions at First Session. The chosen immersive art piece will premiere in 2020.
